The Celtic Tiger Frame of Mind

.

Despite popular opinion, nice people do still exist in the world.

.

It’s funny. When we had a boom, Celtic Tiger and everything we wanted, a large majority of us became total arseholes, looking down on other people and judging. It was my one pro-recession thought was that perhaps a bit of humility would make a lot of these “up-on-their-high-horse” people a bit more mannerly. It worked on some.

.

In the last week, since the snow has cleared up, the main road by my house has been deadly for pot holes. See: http://ahayzer42.wordpress.com/2010/01/14/on-the-road-not-if-i-can-help-it/

.

Naturally enough, this has caused problems. And damage that I’m sure the Council won’t reimburse people for seeing as it’s up to them to make roads drive-worthy in return for yours and my road tax.

.

So my father gained a new job in the last week. We have a car park outside our house, it being a public house and all, but for the last week it became a pit-stop where repairs were carried out not quite as fast as those in a Formula 1 race.

.

But my dad changed a lot of tyres for people. One particular woman was incredibly rude to him. She did not have whatever the tool for removing nuts on a wheel is called so my father rummaged around the store to find something that would work. He changed the wheel for her, to which she grunted some thanks, got in the car and sped away from the place as if the very thought of being seen outside a small country pub repulsed her. Clearly still trapped within the mind-frame of the Celtic Tiger yuppie then…

.

However, for every bad egg, there’s a good one. On opening up for the evening one day last week, a woman whom my father had changed a tyre for came into the bar with an envelope. It turned out to be voucher for O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar in Wexford town as a thank you present for helping her with the car.

.

It seems that gratitude and manners do still exist in the world. But unfortunately it looks like it’ll be a while before everyone else gets out of that yuppie, Celtic Tiger frame of mind.
