Driving has always been my passion since my childhood. I was dreaming about my first car since last 2 years. Finances and other family priorities kept me away from realizing my dream. Finally on 26th October 2009, me and wifey decided to buy our own first car.
I got the car delivered on 3rd December – a day after our first wedding anniversary, and a new chapter of our life begun.
Complete experience with dealer, I will post in Dealer Reviews section. So I’ll directly jump to my impression about the car so far. It has completed 900 KMs in about 1.5 months and has gone through 1st free service.Wifey calls it “Golu”, a word generally used for fat, chubby kids .
Exterior -
It does look different from other conventionally designed cars. I like it though. From front, it has a very imposing stance. It is very very tall (may be the tallest of all hatchbacks) and this adds to the bigger feeling you get when you stand by the car. Headlights are very big. The front grill and fog lamps compliment the big headlamps nicely. Coming to the controversial rear design, I find it unique. I love the boomerang shaped tail lamps. They are placed very high touching the roof-line of the car. Paint job is not as good as that of Hyundai or Fiat, but one has to compromise in one or the other aspect.
Interior -
The moment you step inside the car, you get a BIG feeling. It is very very spacious from inside. All my friends appreciated huge front legroom. The dashboard is one of the longest of the competition and you get a feeling of big car because of it. Quality of plastics used is one of the best amongst all Maruti cars (still no match to Hyundai). Black ZXi comes with dual tone blue-gray interiors. The top of dashboard and door trims have blue shade and other parts are of gray color. This is a unique combination of colors and I must say it looks good. Boot is large enough to hold 2 large suitcases. There is no light provided in the boot.
A-pillar is very thick (standard in modern cars I guess?) and becomes obstructive when taking right turns. One has to be careful, when taking tight right turns. C-pillar is also very thick and rear glass area is very small. Due to this rear visibility is not the best, though I have got used to it. With the help of big sized ORVMs and IRVM, reversing is not a problem anymore that I don’t feel the need for reverse parking sensors as of now. The IRVM is NOT anti-glare though mentioned as automatic day-light mirror in the brochure. There is no switch on the mirror to change as per day or night. I have asked the dealer to escalate this to Maruti, but no response have been received so far.
Controls -
All the controls (AC, Music System, Wiper and light stalks) are placed at conveniently reachable distance for the driver. Speed-o-meter is one big dial with lot of small warning signs around it. I didn’t like it initially but have now settled with the looks. Once you get used to it, it is very easy to spot things. One thing I love is the position of RPM-meter. As everyone knows, it is placed on the dashboard, which is ideal if you change gears based on RPMs. You don’t have to look all the way down through the steering, just a quick glance gives you current RPM. Dual horn is very good, it’s loud and sharp. Much better than that of i10, which feels like a moped’s horn.
Tilt steering and driver seat height adjustment has good amount of range to satisfy both tall and short drivers. The essential controls like steering, clutch, brake and accelerator are little harder (compared to i10 I test drove) but gives good response to be confident. Central locking has a very good feature that all the doors get locked once car crosses 20 KMPH speed. Doors do not get unlocked when engine is switched off on signals (my colleague’s Elantra gets unlocked when engine is switched off). Hatch door is also unlocked when you unlock all the doors using central or remote locking. There is no lever provided to release the hatch door from inside, you have to unlock all the doors. Haven’t used the fog lamps so far, so can’t comment on their usefulness.
AC is very very effective but lack of automatic climate control is disappointing. It cools the cabin (including rear passengers) really fast. I always keep the blower to position 1 and temperature gauge at around 9 o’clock. Front and rear defoggers work like a charm and glass gets cleared within seconds. Front wipers are not of great quality, it leaves quite a lot marks and doesn’t swipe completely. Rear wiper is a boon for me as I can’t drive without rear vision. The motor for rear wiper is inside the door and is not insulated I guess because it makes noise when activated.
Music system -
ZXi model comes with factory fitted Nippon music system. Sound quality is adequate for me. Sound is pretty clear at lower volumes (enough to cut out all the outside noise) with enough bass. Quality of the FM output is more than I expected. Controls on the head unit are not very user friendly and one has to go through the user manual to understand all the different functionalities. Size of the head unit screen is very small with very little information displayed at any given point of time. Haven’t tried the Aux-in functionality yet. Lack of USB is disappointment, one would expect to get USB when you spend 5.5+ lakhs on a car. Audio controls on the steering is again a boon as the driver doesn’t have to reach out to head-unit. Head unit comes with a remote control also, which can be used by co-passengers to operate the music system. 4 speakers are placed inside 4 doors, which starts jarring at higher volumes.
Engine Performance -
In this department, I can only compare my car to the i10 I test drove. The engine is very much silent throughout all the gears except for lower RPMs in idle. When idle, RPM keeps hovering between 600 to 750, and when near 600 the engine does vibrate which you can feel through the steering. Lower gears have enough grunt for slow moving traffic. Engine comes to its life when it crosses 1600 RPM and you can suddenly feel a thrust when you rev the engine (not in the leagues of a turbo though). If you can keep the car at around 2000 RPM all the time, you won’t feel lack of power ever. One good thing about the engine is, it feels very responsive even at higher speeds (85 KMPH is the maximum I have done so far because of running-in period), just with a small push on the accelerator, you can feel the car giving good feedback.
I haven’t felt any difference in engine response when AC is switched ON. One strange thing I have noticed is, when clutch is pressed the RPM goes up (don’t know if this is true with all the cars). As mentioned above, gear lever is positioned on the center console of the dashboard. Very convenient to hold. The lever is very short with accurate shifting. The throw is also very short and it slots perfectly except for reverse gear, which doesn’t engage sometimes.
Drive -
ZXi comes factory fitted with 185/70 R14 JK Vectra tyres. They are fine as far as you are running on smooth roads, but start making lot of noise on not-so-smooth roads. I did want to upgrade to either Yokos or Michelins, but couldn’t because of financials. Alloys that are used are really really good and gels well with my Black car. Never felt the need to buy better looking alloys. Spare tyre also comes with alloy wheel.
The ride is not as smooth as I expected. It was bit bumpy. When I checked the air pressure for the first time after about 10 days, I found that it was 41 PSI in all 4 tyres . I got it reduced to 30 (manual says 29 for all 4) and ride has improved after that. Cabin is insulated pretty well from outside noise. Front seat comfort is much better compared to rear. I haven’t sat in the rear seat so far, but I think it is not as comfortable as front though none of the rear seat passengers have complained so far. Ground clearance is 170mm and coupled with shorter wheelbase in its class, the under-body of the car doesn’t touch any of the devil speed-breakers on Bangalore roads (with car fully loaded).
FE -
I use only Shell normal petrol for my bike and car both. First full tank (measured over 428 KMs) gave me 14.46 KMPL in city with AC ON all the time. 40% of the time, car was driven in typical Bangalore bumper-to-bumper traffic and rest of the time, bit relaxed city traffic. 50% of the time car was fully loaded with 5 adult passengers.
If you’re observant you might notice the extremely large percentage of South Dakota-plated vehicles in Cabo. In fact, you might draw the conclusion that the entire state drives down here for the winter season. But what you might not know is that many of those vehicles belong to people who don’t live in South Dakota. I’d even bet some of them have never been to that state. Yet, their cars are registered there. What’s up with that?
Once you have a home here, whether as your full time residence or a vacation property, you’ll want a car. How else are you going to get to the beach? You can buy a car here, of course, but many people prefer to bring one down from the US or Canada. Once the car is here you may drive it around Cabo perfectly legally, as long as the foreign plates are current. Your car insurance, already a bargain by US standards, is actually cheaper if the car bears foreign plates. So instead of converting the car’s nationality, many expatriates prefer to continue to use the plates from the U.S..
Here’s the thing: some of the states involved have made procedures for renewing those license plates annoying, to say the least. Driving to Cabo is a blast (see prior blogs), but not something you want to be forced to do on a regular basis. And, let’s face it, some of the cars don’t here aren’t really up to the task. Yet, if your state requires an inspection or smog test, you have no choice. To make matters worse, some states such as California, require a local insurance policy even if the car is out of state. Ouch!
In the past most locals followed a predictable course: they just ignored the whole thing and continued to drive the car on expired plates. For others, who wanted to at least put on a good show a lively business grew up providing forged stickers and registration papers. They might not have fooled a real CHP agent, but were good enough to convince the local cops. Some were able to nationalize their cars through a process called ‘importation’, but the bureaucracy involved is arcane, time consuming, and expensive.
And then someone discovered South Dakota. South Dakota evidently is very willing to sell you a valid registration and license plates even if you don’t live there. They require no smog test, no inspection, and no certificate of insurance. Best of all, the renewal is only $38. These are valid registrations, and recognized throughout Mexico.
The intrepid Cabo resident who discovered this and learned how to navigate the system is Bob Jankovics, and he has created a business of processing the paperwork for the transfer of registration. Once he’s gotten you your plates the renewal process is relatively simple and straight-forward. We used this to get my husband’s Suburban out of limbo. We’d previously paid someone to transfer ownership to Mexico, but they botched the job. So we were stuck: no US plates (they’d been surrendered), and our Mexican plates weren’t valid and couldn’t be renewed. No one could figure out how to straighten out the paperwork. We contracted with Bob J, who only took a week or so to deliver our brand new South Dakota license plates. A few weeks later our new registration papers arrived in the mail through our California forwarding service. We’ve even renewed the plates since then with no problem. All perfectly legit.
The Cabo locals (we don’t use the term ex-pat) are absolutely ingenious at figuring out solutions to all the little details of living for U.S. citizens in Mexico. The use of South Dakota plates is no exception, I’ve been told there are well over 600 of us so far and more converting every week. As a public service, here’s how you can join the crowd.
Bob Jankovics can be reached at bobjankovics@gmail.com, or local cell phone (624) 129-9232. He prefers to meet you at Costco to go over the paperwork; it’s convenient for all parties since this isn’t a real business for him.
And if there is someone driving one of these cars who really is from South Dakota, I’d love to hear from you!

While many Perth families have been obsessing over the MySchools website, this week I have been I’ve been concerned with the big issues.
Such as, what is it with Perth people and trolleys?
I hate having to pay to use a trolley at the airport but I am more and more inclined to support moves for a pay for use/deposit system at shopping centres.
Perhaps I am more sensitive than usual, having only picked my car up from the smash repairers last week, but it seems trolley laziness is at an all time high.
I have four shopping centres within a five to 10 minute drive. The closest is the one I favour the least because no one seems able to put a trolley away anywhere other than between parked cars.
On Thursday night I went to the centre that is furthest away, parked relatively close due to the time and moved a trolley from in front of my car to the return bay.
Half an hour later I emerged to find another trolley stuck in front of the car.
But today’s incident takes the cake. I pulled into the busy car park at another shopping centre (not a major), spotted one free bay and as I indicated to pull in, a man with a trolley used the spare bay to park his groceries.
Noticing my plan to park, he moved the trolley a bit closer to his station wagon and continue to unpack. I got out of the car, said thanks and went to get my bag from the boot.
Then, the man moved the trolley up between our cars and went to get into his car to leave. I couldn’t believe it – the trolley return bay was directly opposite his car, about 5m away.
So I promptly walked back to my side of the car, grabbed the trolley and marched it to the bay, saying loudly I couldn’t believe how lazy he was.
To which he responded “maybe I shouldn’t have been so courteous earlier” (bearing in mind – he was actually hogging an entire car bay with his trolley during peak Saturday shopping hours). To which I responded “you win some, you lose some – that was going to blow into the car.” To which he responded “it would have blown the other way”- as in, not into my car but whoever parked there next!
Our civilised exchange was observed by several people including a couple whose Hyundai Getz was parked in front of us and could just as easily have been damaged by said trolley. But no one seemed to care.
I am thinking that from now on, I will park my car covered in bubble wrap.
Hoons, tailgaters, people who refuse to let you merge, people who don’t wave to say thanks when you let them in, people who don’t care if they hit your car with a trolley…Perth driver, you really are crap.
HCM City to have first underground car park QĐND – Friday, January 29, 2010, 20:26 (GMT+7)
The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has allowed the Underground Space Development Investment Corporation (IUS) to carry out a project to build an underground car park in District 1.
The project, the first of its kind in the country, will be conducted in the form of build-operate-transfer with an investment capital of over 1.7 trillion VND (97 million USD).
Construction of the project is scheduled to start in late February and is expected to be completed in 2012.
The 103,225 sq.m five-storey park will be capable of accommodating 2,025 motorbikes, 1,250 cars and 28 buses or trucks.
Ho Chi Minh City is home to some 370,000 cars and 3.7 million motorbikes. The number of registered vehicles in the city increases by 12 percent each year with about 120 new cars and 1,200 new motorbikes every day while parking space in the city, especially in downtown districts, is insufficient.
The city’s authority expected that the car park will effectively help reduce traffic jam in the city.
Team Hall & Nass 2010 Cadillac Week Challenge Twitter Contest
As you are aware (or should be if you are reading this post), we recently attended the Cadillac Culinary Media Tour, an event for select members of the Texas automotive media to experience what life is like for the “typical” Cadillac owner. We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided to dedicate an entire week of coverage to different aspects of the event, and to the amazing Cadillac vehicles we experienced.
As a fun way to say thank you to all of our loyal Team Hall & Nass fans for your amazing support of our Cadillac Week coverage, we are conducting an exciting #CadillacWeekChallenge contest to see who is enjoying our daily #CadillacWeek content the most. The winner will receive a cool “Cadillac-related prize!”

When the Contest Will Occur
Our Cadillac Week Challenge Twitter Contest will take place beginning on Thursday, January 28th 2010 at 8 PM EST and will conclude on Friday, January 29th 2010 at 8 PM EST. Be sure to tune in to @TeamHallnNass on Twitter during this 24 hour period as questions can occur at any time (though we may have to sleep somewhere in there too!). Most of the contest questions will occur on Friday during US daylight hours, but not all!
The winner will be announced on Twitter AND on the TeamHallnNass blog! The winner must be able to be reached via DM (which is why you have to follow @TeamHallnNass) in order to discuss shipping. Afterward, your prize will be shipped to you the following week from our super-secret Team Hall & Nass location.
How to Play (in much greater detail)
To keep things as simple as possible, we are going to ask a series of questions (via Twitter) and the first person who responds to us via Twitter with the correct answer to each question (via an @ or DM) will be acknowledged as having won that round. The person who wins the most rounds by the end of the contest week will win the “Cadillac-related prize.”
To make things easier, we’re going to be providing several hints on what areas (posts, vids or Tweets) the answers to the questions are located in. So if you’re stumped, @ or DM and say, “I’m stumped!” The more people who are stumped, the easier/more obvious we’ll make the hints and/or the questions. We want this to be fun for y’all, not work!
All contest questions Tweeted out by us will be designated with the hashtag #CadillacWeekChallenge. It is a good idea to place this hashtag along with the numerical designation of the question you are answering (i.e.: Q1, Q5, Q10, etc.) in your response along with your answer to alleviate any potential confusion on either end (ours or yours).
Example:
Us – TeamHallnNass #CadillacWeekChallenge Q1. What week are we celebrating?
You – @TeamHallnNass The Q1 answer is Cadillac Week #CadillacWeekChallenge
Us – TeamHallnNass @BIGHallnNassFan You are correct! You’ve won round Q1!
See how easy that is?
How and Where to Find ALL of the Answers
Each day this week, there has been at least one new Cadillac-related post daily on our blog. In addition, be sure to review every Cadillac-related Tweet this week (beginning on Monday, January 25th at 12:01 AM EST through Friday, January 29th at 8 PM EST, or up until the last question of the contest, whichever comes first). Last, but certainly not least, make sure you view all four segments of our CTS-V ride and drive review that will be posted on our YouTube page on Thursday, January 28th. Be sure to listen to all of the things that are said out loud within these videos.
Again, all of the answers to all of the questions in the contest can be found within our TeamHallnNass.wordpress.com Cadillac blog content, OR within our YouTube.com/TeamHallnNass page Cadillac videos, OR within our @TeamHallnNass Cadillac Tweets on Twitter. There are no ringers, no tricks, and no hidden answers. Everything is (or will be) posted in plain sight for all to see!
Plus, remember that we’re going to be providing several hints on what areas (posts, vids or Tweets) the answers to the questions are located in. So if you’re stumped, @ or DM and say, “I’m stumped!” The more people who are stumped, the easier/more obvious we’ll make the hints and/or the questions. We want this to be fun, not work!
The Prize
One lucky winner will be awarded a “Cadillac-related prize” by Team Hall & Nass. What is it exactly? Well, we don’t want to spoil the surprise, but let’s just say it’s something not very expensive, but actually pretty cool. No, it’s not a Cadillac (we wish!). But it is a Cadillac-related item, provided to us by General Motors (not for this contest, but as a personal gift to us). We just love and appreciate our fans so much that we want one of you to have a chance to win it! So play for laughs and play for fun, but answer to win!
The Rules
You MUST follow @TeamHallnNass on Twitter to be eligible to win. Don’t worry, you can always unfollow us after the contest should you choose to, but we hope you’ll stick around for our continued hijinx for the 2010 season and beyond.
The person who responds on Twitter to @TeamHallnNass (via @ reply only) with the most correct answers first (round winners) at the end of our Cadillac Week Challenge will be the winner!
Not a Twitter user? Sign up today at Twitter.com and follow @TeamHallnNass to play!
Due to only having one prize to award, there can only be one prize winner. All decisions on the contest, the rules, judgments, etc. will be determined by Team Hall & Nass, and our rulings and decisions will be deemed final.
Tie Breaker (if necessary)
In the event of a tie, those who are tied for the lead will be notified via Twitter and a playoff will be held. If necessary, the playoff will be conducted beginning at 8 PM EST on Friday, January 29th 2010. The playoff will consist of a series of bonus Cadillac Week Challenge questions will be asked one at a time until the tie is broken (by the same conventional challenge rules listed above). It will be a sudden death playoff round, so you’ll have to be at the ready to answer quickly and correctly.
Exclusions
All of our fans and followers are welcome (and encouraged) to play. However, any employee (or affiliate) of General Motors or Cadillac are (unfortunately) ineligible to win. This is only because y’all have an unfair knowledge advantage of all the questions we are going to ask within this contest!
Furthermore, Charlie and Nick from Burnout Radio are not eligible to play, win, or even to shout answers out, since they participated in this event with us. They know too much, and therefore, must die! (JUST KIDDING)!
We hope you enjoy the #CadillacWeekChallenge and wish you all the best of luck! Let the games begin!
Well, it used to be red. The “car” I am referring to is a Toyota Corolla model 1979 that was the first my dad ever bought for the family. It was bright red and really spiffy looking back then.
By today’s standards, it is small for a sedan but not as eensy-weensy as the compact models sold in the market. This car holds a lot of sentiment not only for me but my two sisters as well. Aside from the fact that we went on a lot of family trips on board this vehicle, it was with this little red car that we all learned to drive.
No, dad did not actually teach us. In fact, his only condition in allowing us to drive when we turned 18 was that we had to attend driving school. That was five consecutive one hour sessions. Learn we did and with a student license on hand, he allowed us to practice with the little red car so we could eventually get our driver’s license.
Because of its size, the car is easy to maneuver, never mind that it was way before the advent of power-steering. It was fuel efficient and unlike most cars manufactured nowadays, its body was sturdy and built to last.
I have first-hand experience as to its durability because the one and only bad vehicular accident I was involved in was aboard the little red car. I swear it wasn’t my fault because the other car came from a side street that did not allow crossing the intersection where we crashed into each other. Little red car’s hood was badly damaged and had to be taken in for repairs for about two to three weeks. When we got it back, it was as good as new.
At around the time I was covering President Aquino, dad had gotten a second car and so I was allowed to use the red one, especially if coverage was early in the morning or it would extend until late at night. My journalist friends and I had a lot of memories with this car because I often ended up driving everyone home after our nightcaps following work. It was privy to a lot of stories and gossip, heartaches and joys.
It was sometime in 1997 when dad decided to sell the red car. My mother’s brother in the province snapped it up because he knew it was still in very good condition despite years of use. After the documentation was in order, he drove it back to the province and has been with him ever since.
The last time I was in Tacloban around eight years ago, it was the vehicle that took us around, not only around the city but all the way to Samar province on one hand and down to Carigara in the opposite direction. We really had a grand tour then, and little red car was our indispensable ride.
I have forgotten about this car until we landed in Tacloban last Saturday for uncle’s burial. Lo and behold — what should be meeting us but little red car! Well, it’s since been repainted with maroon but I’d recognize that car anywhere (it still bears the same license plate, which I knew by heart). Outside, it still looked spiffy. But of course years of use have taken its toll. And because it still serves its primary purpose of getting people from one place to the other, and as is usually the way in the province, uncle has not bothered to fix whatever may be broken or missing inside. You want to roll down the windows in the back, the knob is detached and sitting near the dashboard… The speedometer is shaky at best but it never runs beyond 50 kph anyway. Uncle would not let me drive it because the brakes has quirks in them. They don’t bother to lock the doors anymore because no one seems interested in it.
But in spite its defects now, the little red car still holds a lot of memories for me. It has served us, and served us well. And I know that for as long as it still does the job of taking people around the city, getting from point A to point B and in one piece, I am sure uncle will still be driving that car for more years to come.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but for a majority of people (in America), childhood was a relatively care-free time in our lives – compared to adulthood. It seems that the older I get (not that I’m very old) the worse my luck gets. Now, I know that’s on account of having more responsibilities, over dramatizing, cultural influences, and my own personal thinking, buuuut being an adult blows. Instead of losing a toy, I lose my wallet; instead of breaking a plate, I total a car; and instead of falling and scraping my knee, I get shot (this one hasn’t happened… yet). Being an adult puts your life in even more present danger than it already was. You’re exposed to elements that, as a child, you have no knowledge of and (hopefully) no contact with.
When you’re a child, one bad thing doesn’t turn into a bad day, two doesn’t even merit an hour of thought in your mind, but when you’re an adult a lot of the time, one bad thing will spark a domino effect of bad events, or seemingly bad events, that turn your entire day to shit.
Now the more that I think about it, the more I seem to realize that a lot of this has to do with our culture, our attitudes, and the way we handle things. Because not everybody lets their day be ruined by a broken plate or a stolen wallet, some people brush it off and make their day better. Man, I wish I were one of those people. I’m able to let a lot of things go, but when one thing after another keeps happening sometimes I have to be in a bad mood. I like being cheered up by co-workers or I like to decompress at the end of the day. Maybe I like to do something out of the ordinary or ‘bad’ in order to make myself feel better.
The thing is that I don’t really like being in a bad mood – its just my way of throwing my hands up at the world, waving the white flag, and saying, “I give up, you win today”.
Just the other day, I had my wallet stolen and I was in an openly hostile mood with all of the people that I worked with. I could tell that I was affecting everyone, I could tell that I shouldn’t be reacting like this, and I knew that I shouldn’t be taking it out on everyone, but I couldn’t help myself – it was just easier. I didn’t want to talk to anyone, but I didn’t want to be in a bad mood either. Thankfully, one of the guys I work with started cracking some jokes which cheered me up a bit. I underestimate the people in my life, best friends, acquaintances, and co-workers alike.
Anyway, got off topic a while ago and turned it into an appreciative rant haha go figure. But what are your thoughts? Do you have a remedy to get rid of bad days? Do you have someone in particular that can ALWAYS cheer you up? Or do you not agree with me at all? Lets have it.
Let me take you back to a comment that Tony posted on the post of “Wangan Steals”

Nissan will start selling its first small car in India from July. The company is on track to open their new factory in March with production commencing in May. The company said it planned to export the Micra from late 2010 and establish India as a global manufacturing hub. The Micra will help the firm tap the growing Indian car market, which is forecast to triple to six million cars from two million in a decade.
Austin Speed Shop is doing its fair part to bring some automotive shenanigans to a city with a history of ambivalence toward hot rodding. It doesn’t hurt that Jesse James of West Coast Choppers fame is now involved. Among the sweet rods that roll out of the their South Lamar shop is this ridiculous Model A.

After many hours of research, guilt, uncertainty, pressure, and realizing when two people work full time that we can afford one car, we took the dirty plunge. I work in the sticks, Cara works in the sticks (plus Hamilton one to two days a week). It takes me about 60 minutes one way, Cara about 75 on transit. I now need wheels for field work and getting to some remote locations, Cara wants to feel safe on the busiest highway in the world (better reason).
And I do feel OK about the car itself (used 2009 Ford Escape off a one-year lease), realizing it’s nothing more than a depreciating transport device. I like to express myself, but I worry about expressing myself through an automobile. Just a bit too scary, I don’t know why. It’s what we’ve all been bred to do, clothes and shoes and furniture and music and food and gear are no different. So who knows things like this.
As for our Mother Earth, the jury is out. It’s not a fully robust argument, but a used anything is potentially much better environmentally than new, especially a new Prius. From Wired Magazine:
“Making a Prius consumes 113 million BTUs, according to sustainability engineer Pablo Paster. A single gallon of gas contains about 113,000 Btus, so Toyota’s green wonder guzzles the equivalent of 1,000 gallons before it clocks its first mile. A used car, on the other hand, starts with a significant advantage: The first owner has already paid off its carbon debt”.
Meaning do some full cost accounting on your car (production, distribution, disposal) and realize that used cars can cut down on two (and potentially all) of these things. Production would account for 10-15% of total emissions so we’re already good there. Yes I’m enabling the car market but at least I’m not mining new materials. The Escape’s mileage is on par with most mid-size cars, so I feel we’re in a good ballpark all things considered with operating impacts. Le sigh. Down the rabbit holes we go.
Yesterday there was a car alarm going off. This is absolutely nothing new in Lima, and to be perfectly honest I have trained myself to tune them out. However, this particular car alarm went of for approximately four hours, AND they were parked directly in front of the house. So Ana Maria called the cops. And while we were waiting for the cops, the owner of the car showed up, so Ana Maria went outside to confront him (and stall), so when the cops showed up he was already pissed off and started yelling at the guy giving him a ticket. So awesome.
Caught an afternoon of MTV today and was instantly impressed with this video by Owl City called Fireflies. One of my twitter friends is actually seeing the band perform tonight in concert in St. Louis, Missouri. And I can’t wait for them to play a gig in the UK, though the 18th February date at Camden’s Electric Ballroom is already totally sold out! The album Ocean Eyes is available on iTunes March 1st 2010.
I’m not quite sure why I’ve only just become aware of Adam Young’s talent; this is exactly the sort of track that advertisers would love to use on a commercial. I guess it’s because I rarely listen to radio now that my daily commute is by underground rail rather than car. And I really miss driving! But then I also love living in the centre of London! I can’t have it both ways…
New job… still on the search BUT the Subaru Forester is ON THE WAY!!!
Now sourcing for financing and insurance on installments :) Not a problem, now the thing is the loan application which shouldn’t be a problem as Dear’s credit ratings have been good
And the dealer, Vincent Tan, did mentioned that earliest we could get the ride is on Tuesday! Woohoo!!! I’m lovin’ it!

Do you want to find out how to become a video tester? Then you have come at the right place. In this article you will find out everything there is to know about making money from playing video games. Most people have no idea that there are companies which are willing to pay you for gaming. The truth is that the gaming industry hires thousands of people every year to check games before they are released and report any malfunctions and errors. If a game with bugs in the system hits the market, the company would face great financial loss and its reputation would get damaged. In case you are interested in becoming a video game tester, there are a few things you need to consider:
* Beginner testers make about $10-$20 an hour, but if you become more experienced you may be able to earn $80 an hour. * A big company will only hire you after you have proven yourself, so you need to start working with smaller ones and work yourself to the top slowly. * This is a real job! Don’t bother to apply for it if you don’t actually love gaming. You will have to put in some long hours to test every character, map and weapon and report every error you find. Many times it may take you days or even weeks to finish the job. Of course, playing the hottest new releases months before the general public gets their hands on then can be very exciting and the fact that you can be your own boss makes this job better than most other jobs on the market. * You need to be over 18 years old to be hired. * You won’t be provided with computers or consoles, so you must already own these devices. * Before starting, you need to make sure that you understand exactly what kind of feedback the company is looking from you.

Renting PS3 games on the web is the best option with the growing demand of these services. This is because the stores normally do not have a good selection of the same. Additionally the Internet makes everything easy for you. All you have to do is to visit a website which offers PS3 games rental services and then key in the titles of the games you want to try out and voila! You have your favorite game at your fingertips without having to spend a huge amount of money on it. Sounds familiar, right? Hanoi: Car parking fees vary according to land prices QĐND – Wednesday, January 20, 2010, 21:48 (GMT+7)
Hanoi’s authority has received several suggestions concerning the charges for car parking in some central districts, said Mr Nguyen The Thao, Chairman of the Committee on January 19th.
Mr Thao said that the method was also applied in many places in the world, such as Paris and London. Since the idea is realistic, the city might deliver it to car owners in the coming time.
Car parking fee will be charged according to the land price in the area; ie, in Hoan Kiem District, average land price is VND 60 million per square meter so that parking fee will be around VND 10,000 for the first hour and increased in each subsequent hour.

Despite popular opinion, nice people do still exist in the world.
.
It’s funny. When we had a boom, Celtic Tiger and everything we wanted, a large majority of us became total arseholes, looking down on other people and judging. It was my one pro-recession thought was that perhaps a bit of humility would make a lot of these “up-on-their-high-horse” people a bit more mannerly. It worked on some.
.
In the last week, since the snow has cleared up, the main road by my house has been deadly for pot holes. See: http://ahayzer42.wordpress.com/2010/01/14/on-the-road-not-if-i-can-help-it/
.
Naturally enough, this has caused problems. And damage that I’m sure the Council won’t reimburse people for seeing as it’s up to them to make roads drive-worthy in return for yours and my road tax.
.
So my father gained a new job in the last week. We have a car park outside our house, it being a public house and all, but for the last week it became a pit-stop where repairs were carried out not quite as fast as those in a Formula 1 race.
.
But my dad changed a lot of tyres for people. One particular woman was incredibly rude to him. She did not have whatever the tool for removing nuts on a wheel is called so my father rummaged around the store to find something that would work. He changed the wheel for her, to which she grunted some thanks, got in the car and sped away from the place as if the very thought of being seen outside a small country pub repulsed her. Clearly still trapped within the mind-frame of the Celtic Tiger yuppie then…
.
However, for every bad egg, there’s a good one. On opening up for the evening one day last week, a woman whom my father had changed a tyre for came into the bar with an envelope. It turned out to be voucher for O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar in Wexford town as a thank you present for helping her with the car.
.
It seems that gratitude and manners do still exist in the world. But unfortunately it looks like it’ll be a while before everyone else gets out of that yuppie, Celtic Tiger frame of mind.
It’s a well-known fact that BMW drivers do not know how to turn on their indicators when making simple manoeuvres, navigating roundabouts, changing lanes on the motorway etc, however I have now discovered a new trend among drivers of 4×4s that renders them incapable of parking.
To us mere mortals who spend our days going from place to place in simple, small, convenient cars, there are at certain times the need these auto mobiles into pre-defined, shaped boxes, marked on to a car park in white. For most of us this procedure is clear and executed perfectly each time it is called for. For drivers of 4×4, mostly land rovers (or range rovers, not really sure which and don’t really care they’re technically the same) , the art of parking seems to either have been exchanged with the car salesman as part of the deal they signed with the devil when purchasing their behemoth or they just didn’t possess it in the first place or because they are now so high up that their grasp on reality is somewhere many feet below with the everyday, parking-capable people.
On countless occasions I have come across an unnecessarily massive 4×4 jutting out of a parking space and such an avant-garde angle that you wonder whether the driver had suddenly remembered what they were driving and had got out as quickly as possible to go and jump of the top floor of the car park. And on a similar point the damn things don’t fit in normal parking spaces so they sit there sticking their front end 2 foot out into the road.
Now I understand that there are safety reasons for buying a massive car like this, but that’s all very well if you are in one when they are in an accident. If you are unfortunate enough to be the one on the receiving end I imagine that having 2 foot of radiator grill and Audi badge stuffed into you cranium can only end badly.
One of my biggest fears about coming to Los Angeles was having to rent a car, but so far it hasn’t been that bad. First of all, it’s an automatic, so I don’t have to worry about stalling out or shifting. Second of all, the speed limits in LA are pretty low. There is just as much traffic as I expected, but no one goes that fast. The huge interstate I use to get to work, for example, has a maximum speed limit of 55 mph and everyone follows it.
The one huge issue, however, is parking. I was hoping to get a teeny car so that parking would be a breeze, but they were out of small cars at the rental company. So, I have to park and repark multiple times every time I pull into my tiny tiny parking spot (next to a poll- just my luck). Parking spaces in LA are so much smaller than anywhere else. How do all these Hummer drivers do it? Today I spent about 10 minutes trying to park in a parking garage and it ended up that my side mirrors were each 1 inch away from other cars’ side mirrors and I could barely squeeze out of my door. What a pain! By the time I’m done this semester, I’ll be a parking expert!
Pictures!
Luckily for my sake, there is a piece of bubble wrap taped to the pole next to my car- just at bummer height. How hilarious!
There it is. That item you have been wanting for ages is finally on sale. Your credit card bills are almost paid off. Your bank account isn’t in the negatives. Can this be the moment you finally get that item?
It’s a loaded question. I’m not one to answer it, nor do I have the knowledge on how to answer it. I have however, asked myself this many times. Including today. Thanks to a DSW sale of 50% off (www.dsw.com, promo code 50clear) I almost had that moment with a $139.00 pair of riding boots I had been eying. They are really nice boots that I have been wanting/eying for ages and here they are, a whopping 50% off. That’s huge. But then circumstances popped up for me, as well as my friend who wanted a similar pair, and we both realized that there are certain signs in life that tell you when you just shouldn’t buy someting. I’ve decided that when living in the city or living on a budget or both, it is good to follow this list. And so, I present to you, in no particular order….
My TOP 5 Signs that you Should NOT Buy that Item:
If you need to check your bank accounts to see where you have money for the item. Bottom line, if you don’t know for sure that you have the money for the item off the top of your head, don’t buy it.
If you are fighting to get the website to let you use your promo codes. I love a good promo code, I love a good coupon- who doesn’t. Bottom line, if you cannot afford the item without the discount then it’s likely that you can live without it. The items we NEED we will buy with or without a coupon code. Don’t fight with the website, let it go.
If you have to add more to your cart to get the free shipping option. Let me get this straight- you can’t afford to pay shipping but you can afford another item. No. This method is a trick to get you to buy more, and like #2, if you really NEEDED that item, shipping wouldn’t even come into question.
If you know that the minute you order the item you will have buyers remorse. It’s okay, we all flip flop. But if you know that once you get your heavenly item, you will actually feel bad about it, don’t get it. It should make you happy, not make you feel guilty.
Is this what you really WANT? You’re concerned about money. Why? Think about it. What is it you want out of your money? A house? A vacation? A new car? To get out of debt? Now think about what you want at that moment. Shoes? Make-up? Cheesecake Factory? Mario Kart for the WII? A John Cena personalized CENATION Jersey (sorry I can’t help myself)? Which set of items do you want more? I want the house, the vacation and the car. Do you want what is going to satisfy you or do you want what is going to fufill you? Think about it, there is a difference.
And so with that being said, my friend and I both closed our DSW browsers and didn’t buy our shoes. I think we ultimately made the right decision. I have plenty of shoes in my closet that can get me by without needing riding boots. And who knows… maybe one day I’ll have an even bigger closet and then I’ll need a new pair of shoes to fill it up. That’s what I’m working towards.
Turn signals. Blinkers. Your car comes with them..for a reason! There are laws about using them…for a reason! Use them!
Maybe the name “turn signals” confuses some. You don’t just use them to turn a corner. You use them to change lanes as well. It tells everyone around you what you are doing so they don’t hit you.
Today I’m driving along going 65 mph keeping an appropriate distance between myself and the car in front of me when suddenly, this big minivan (and I mean the big, old-fashion size minivans) moves into my lane, barely having enough room to fit between me and the car in front of me. No turn signal. I had to slam on my brakes. Otherwise I would have hit her. And she had her kid in the back seat. Do people not think about their kids safety anymore?
Oh and another thing. Your Garmin may tell you where to turn…but guess what? I can’t hear that little voice in your head…er…I mean your car… I didn’t hear it tell you “turn right in 300 feet.” So warn me when you are about to suddenly brake to turn right in 300 feet.
My favorite turn signal story happened when I was in 7th or 8th grade and I carpooled with an elementary age kid in my neighborhood. One day, out of the blue, when my mom turned on her blinker (because she was a good driver), he asked “how does the car know how to get to school?” (This was a long time before GPSs now tell people where to go). After my mom and I looked at each other puzzled, she suddenly realized he must have seen the blinker from the backseat. So she explained to him how she turned it on and it wasn’t the car telling her where to go. After listening intently on how this turn signal worked, he stated “I don’t think my mom’s car has one of those.” It was all my mom and I could do not to start lol right then. Well, now that he’s probably in college (or beyond) and driving I’m sure…I hope his car came equipped with turn signals and he uses them!!!
Bottom line. Use your turn signals! Please help me avoid hitting you by telling me if you’re about to stop to turn or merge in front of me. It’s an easy thing to do!
This is the tip of grass that grew wild on the side of the road. It became attached to my car in the summer of ‘08 as I was driving my car into the weeds for fun and mischief. It is now my mascot. It remains through rain, wind and snow. It cannot be dislodged. It will not be denied. It is as much a part of the fine ride as the tires. The grass tip and my car are intertwined in their mutual decay.
High school driver education may be the most convenient way to learn driving skills, but it doesn’t always produce safer drivers. Parents also should set good examples when they drive while reinforcing the lessons their teens learned in drivers ed.
Restrict night driving.
Most nighttime fatal crashes among young drivers occur between 9 p.m. and midnight, so you can reduce their risk of a crash by restricting nighttime driving after 9 p.m. The problem isn’t just that late-night driving requires more skill. Outings late at night tend to be recreational. In these circumstances, even teens who usually follow all the rules can easily be distracted or encouraged to take risks.
Restrict passengers.
Teen passengers in a vehicle can distract a beginning driver and/or lead to greater risk-taking. Because young drivers often transport their friends, there’s a teen passenger problem as well as a teen driver problem. In 2003, 59 percent of teenage passenger deaths occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. While night driving with passengers is particularly lethal, many fatal crashes with teen passengers occur during the day. The best policy is to restrict teen passengers, especially multiple teens, all the time.
Supervise practice driving.
Take an active role in helping your teenager learn how to drive. Plan a series of practice sessions in a wide variety of situations, including night driving. Give beginners time to work up to challenges like driving in heavy traffic or on the freeway. Supervised practice should be spread over at least six months and continue even after a teenager graduates from a learner’s permit to a restricted or full license.
Remember you are a role model.
New drivers learn a lot by example, so practice safe driving. Teens who have crashes and violations often have parents with poor driving records.
Require safety belt use.
Don’t assume that seat belt use when you’re in the car with your 16-year-old means belts will be used all the time, especially when your child is out with peers. Remember that belt use is lower among teenagers than older people. Insist on belts all the time.
Prohibit driving after drinking.
Make it clear that it’s illegal and highly dangerous for a teenager to drive after drinking alcohol or using any other drug. While alcohol isn’t a factor in most crashes of 16-year-old drivers, even small amounts of alcohol will impair teens.
Choose vehicles for safety, not image.
Teenagers should drive vehicles that reduce their chances of a crash and offer protection in case they do crash. For example, small cars don’t offer the best protection in a crash. Avoid cars with performance images that might encourage speeding. Also, be mindful that certain vehicles with a higher center of gravity may be more prone to roll over.

Over here in the UK we’re suffering from some seriously SNOWY weather! Roads are undriveable, schools are closed, everyone appears to be smoking invisible cigarettes… but that infamous British wit is unfazed by the cold snap.
So when the kids ask you how snowmen are made, I DARE you to answer them with this!

Our parallel loves of cars and technology have been dovetailing since the automobile was invented.
Surely not 10 minutes after the first Model T rolled off the assembly line, someone said, “Man, it’d be nice to equip this thing with a telegraph machine, wouldn’t it? Y’know, in case they want to send a wire to New York while they’re motoring.”
This tendency has yielded some worthwhile, even necessary developments (as anyone who’s gone on a long car trip with a broken stereo can tell you).
Listen, we’re big proponents of technology and social media around here, and we hate to even say this because we helped a friend of ours win a Fiesta for 6 months and we’re big fans of Ford, but their latest generation of syncing features has us more than a little concerned. Maybe it’s time to calm the hell down with the tech integration before we all kill each other, hm? Yes, we know Americans can’t go two goddam seconds without engaging with an electronic device, but if we’re going to muster up an attention span for one activity, shouldn’t that activity be driving a car?
Not to sound like your mother or anything, but you’re propelling two tons of steel down a street that likely has some very soft human beings on it. If you’re focused on the myriad things you can do in your car (calling people, receiving calls, browsing your address book, texting, tweeting, updating Facebook, listening to music and podcasts, tagging songs for future iTunes purchase, charging your peripherals, getting directions, looking up movie schedules, making dinner reservations, checking sports scores, inquiring into to the health of your vehicle, and more), it doesn’t matter that you can do most of it with your voice or steering wheel buttons, does it? The sheer number of potential distractions are enough to take anyone’s mind off the road for a critical couple of seconds. Just because your eyes are on the road doesn’t mean your brain is.
The solution to the distracted driving epidemic is not to invent new ways to operate our devices without looking at them. It is to remove them from the car entirely. (You wouldn’t put a gate up at the top of the stairs to protect your toddler and then give him a stool.)
So yes: the fact that Ford can put all these neat gadgets in their new cars is incredibly cool. But perhaps somebody over there should be thinking about whether they even should.
In the meantime, maybe we’ll just stay off the road entirely.

Pioneer to launch high-tech car stereo By John D. Sutter, CNN
January 6, 2010 7:31 p.m. EST
Las Vegas, Nevada (CNN) — Pioneer became the latest company to jump on the car-tech bandwagon on Wednesday when it unveiled a new car stereo unit that has maps with local searches, a “music sphere” and tunes from the Internet radio site Pandora.
A number of companies at the Consumer Electronics Show — the largest trade show of its kind in the world — are or will be featuring gadgets to help drivers get around more easily, access their music databases and give voice commands to their cars.
Pioneer’s touch-screen AVIC-X920BT takes voice commands and has an “ecological awareness” feature to tell drivers about how efficiently they are driving.
A demo at CES showed the navigation device searching for local information and pinpointing it on a GPS map. Drivers can give voice commands to tell the product where they would like to go.
The device will be available in April and costs a whopping $1,200, according to the company.
GPS mapping devices for the car, which find fast routes for drivers and help them get to their destinations, have been falling out of favor as of late, replaced by GPS-enabled smartphones that essentially can perform the same functions, and can be attached to a car dash.
The Pioneer stereo also plays music and has other functions, making it somewhat different from stand-alone car GPS systems.
Microsoft and Kia this week announced a partnership to bring in-car technology called UVO to some Kia cars starting this summer, according to a news release.
The system uses Microsoft’s voice recognition technology and lets drivers tell the device what music they would like to listen to or who they would like to call on the phone.
The UVO is expected to be demonstrated later this week at CES.
On Wednesday, Pioneer also promoted its PAIS technology, which the company said helps a myriad of devices — from iPods to home stereos, car stereos and computers — talk to each other.
Pioneer on Wednesday made that communication technology available for other gadget makers to use.
Remember though that it is just a rental because once you get a taste of the luxury life it will be hard to make that transition backThe second kind of hertz car rental is the hybrid car now although this car is the second priciest doesnt mean that it is any less comfortable than the luxury models Obviously you will have a few less features or bells and whistles but that doesnt mean in any sense that it is still not a great car for anyone to drive in And on top of that if you are taking a long trip you will save even more because you will rarely ever have to pay for any sort of gas as a hybrid can get ridiculous amounts of gas mileage that you would never have imagined I would highly recommend this classification as it has all the comfort of a luxury car at a lower price and you save extra money on top of itThe third option is the hertz car rental for the savvy consumer the individual who just wants to get a car that will run get decent gas mileage and get him where he needs t be That is understandable in todays economy but lets not forget that there are other options available The economy car may be just what you need if you are taking a small road trip for the weekend and dont want to worry about being stranded in your car or not sure if you car is able to make it for that long trip to the beach Let me assure you it is worth it in the long run as you will never be upset when you drive in one of theseWhichever hertz rental car you decide to get always remember that there will be more options for you as well like if you would like unlimited mileage or the limited mileage plan Whichever one you choose it will always be a good choice but choose them according to how long you plan to be driving in your hertz car rental
i’m just wondering if anyone else in the world feels the way that i do…
there are often times when i feel i don’t have much of a place in the world. more than that, i feel that i don’t have my own place. loneliness crowds around me at the times when there are more people around me than i care to count. yet, i never seem to have a place in the world that belongs to me. no specific sanctuary or place of refuge that makes me feel safe whenever i run there.
i always felt that way as a child. by the time i was old enough to understand how valuable personal space was, i already had two younger siblings. although i was the oldest, i was one of two girls, so i often had to share my space with my younger sister. my two younger siblings were close in age and i felt the most out of place when we were all together. a lot of times, they seemed to pair up against me. for the three children of the house, there were only two rooms to live in. i always had to share my space with my sister because our youngest sibling was not a girl…he needed his own room to “be a boy”. even so, the two of them would constantly pick at me. i’d attempt to gather my thoughts in my room (but my sister could walk in whenever she wanted to)…i’d go into the living room or kitchen (but both of my siblings would follow me–kind of doing that “i’m not touching you” taunting sort of thing)…the worst was when i would resort to hiding in the bathroom just to get some peace (but they both caught on to that one, too). eventually, i started hiding in the backseat of our car in the garage. that’s when i think i started feeling calm in cars.
when i was 20 years old, i finally had my first car. i never experienced any comparable sense of calmness prior to owning that car. i finally had my own world. i could interact with people when i desired to (by way of traveling to them), but i could be alone whenever i needed to by simply leaving the public space. i could ride in my car with no music…just hear my thoughts. or i could opt to let my mind fly with the melodies of stevie wonder, jill scott, or someone else who mattered at the moment.
now that i’m a married mommy, i think that is the claustrophobic feeling i often have…i never have any space of my own. i hate to feel like my husband doesn’t want me around, but there are times when i just want to be with my thoughts. babies don’t allow for much of that. husbands don’t either. it’s beautiful to have a family, don’t get me wrong…but there are times when people like me (introverted types) enjoy the simplicity of a solo drive to wal-mart because the five minutes of silence can ease the oncoming tension headache that appears like clockwork every day at the same time. right now, we only have one television…it is located in our room…and i like to be in the bed by 9pm if possible…but it’s IMPOSSIBLE. my hubby likes to stay up til midnight (or later during those holiday off-from-work times). so guess who can’t get to sleep because the tv is on.
i could go on and on about things like this…but i won’t. the point of my random ranting is simply that space is important. space can make or break mental stability (at least for me). so i just wondered if anyone could relate… *shrug*
All human decisions are made by individuals or groups drawing on four basic source to guide them: culture, religion, science or personal experience. Very few human decisions are made on the basis of what works best. Most are an amalgamation of all four basic sources, the worse being religion, then personal experience, then culture, and finally science.
Having experienced the lingering effect of NYE champaign, a simplified version of the psychology of naming cars popped into my light head Who was the dummy at Ford who thought that the Ford Pinto was a winning horse, and berated the American Indian executive who came up with Ford Mustang? Praise the Lord to the wealthy one who came up with a great city and a great president; Chrysler New Yorker and Ford Lincoln. He had divine inspiration. Of course, none of them was as scientific as the Japanese committee that decided on the social Honda civic or the deluxe Lexus, real winners. Poor Germans, got defeated in two world wars they had started, so all they could come up with was a bug and the fleeing rabbit. I wonder why the Russians didn’t come up with a Volga bear hug, the British with the Morris Lion Heart, or the Americans with tiger woods Golf wagon? Personally, I would have preferred a Chevy Wealth, GM Health, and Ford Focus – on Happiness. By the way, that is why, as a psychologist, I was never invited to be on a naming committee for anything. Have a great year.
Ever dreamt of having your own underbody neon kits for your car? but stuck with financial crysis, then here is the right thing 4 u.

Its a really simply job getting the parts and assembling them and getting them on board of your car. At this moment the LED strips are static in nature, that is that no driver circuit is hooked up to drive them crazy….Im on the look for fader on and off circuits for the light strips.
One of the advantaged of using LED’s are that they are extremely energy efficient and produce almost no heat, so no wastage of energy. The wattage of the entire unit is <100W, which is very low when compared to conventional neons. You can snazz up ur ride with these, the usage of fader circuits can provide the “alien spaceship” look to your ride.
Its dirt simple to construct too, anyone with a pinch of brain and little patience can do this, well u can always let ur creativity to wander.
The full schematic of the mod which i used will be posted soon…
